St Michael's C of E Primary School
Geography
At St Michael’s Primary School, we believe that Geography helps provoke and provide answers to questions about the natural and human aspects of the world. We seek to inspire in children a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people which will remain for the rest of their lives, to promote the children’s interest and understanding of diverse places, people together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical processes.
Our curriculum consists of four key concepts that underpin all the knowledge that is taught. These key concepts are place, space, earth systems, environment. Through these concepts each year groups will cover a different aspect of human and physical geography. The unit titles for each year group are as follows.
- Reception: Where we live
- Year 1: Winterbourne to Bristol
- Year 2: City to city
- Year 3: The South West
- Year 4: European mountains
- Year 5: Natural disasters
- Year 6: South America and The Amazon
Through these themes, the children will learn all the specific locational knowledge and place knowledge which has a link to our school or has a relevance to our pupils or society.
Within each unit our local area is fully utilised to provide children with opportunities to conduct field work outside of the classroom. Our Geography curriculum will lead pupils to be enthusiastic learners and equip them with the skills, knowledge and understanding to confidently continue their geography learning journey.
